Baptism is more than an empty ritual or a promise that believers will never struggle again. It is a public marker of deliverance and a lasting anchor for our identity in Christ.

The story behind the story.

The teaching connects baptism with Israel's deliverance through the Red Sea. God brought His people out of slavery and through the water, yet their journey still included doubt and wandering. Their rescue became an anchor—a reminder that they were no longer slaves and that they belonged to God.

In the same way, Christian baptism points to the cross. The water itself does not save us; it represents the life that has gone with Jesus to the cross and risen with Him into a new identity and freedom.

A declaration of identity.

Baptism gives believers a defining moment to remember when shame, doubt, or old patterns try to speak louder than grace. It declares that we have been reclaimed by Jesus, adopted as sons and daughters, and now belong to God.

The short answer

Jesus calls His followers to be baptized. It is an outward declaration of inward faith—a picture of deliverance, death to the old life, and resurrection into a new identity in Christ.
