Water baptism can seem unusual, but its meaning is both practical and profound. It is a response to Jesus, a public identification with Him, and a picture of the new life believers receive through faith.
Water baptism is God’s idea.
Baptism is not a tradition invented by a church. Jesus instructed His followers to make disciples and baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Water baptism does not save anyone.
Salvation begins by trusting in Jesus, not by completing a religious ritual. Baptism matters, but it is not a work that earns acceptance with God.
Baptism is an act of practical obedience.
For someone who has placed faith in Christ, baptism is a clear early step of obedience—an opportunity to approach God on His terms and publicly respond to His direction.
Baptism identifies us with Christ and His Church.
In baptism, believers identify with the death and resurrection of Jesus and with the wider community of everyone who belongs to Christ.
Baptism symbolizes our new life.
Going beneath the water pictures death to the old way of living. Rising from the water pictures resurrection and the new life believers are called to live for God.
If you are pursuing God and have not been baptized, talk with a ministry leader about what baptism means and how to take this step.
